New Products
To ensure that our customers are always offered the latest most advanced materials. The board of Bohler Uddeholm GMBH has committed to increase the expenditure for research and development of new and improved materials. Currently the expenditure is A$ 27 million per year and has more than doubled in the past 6 years.
Spray Formed Steel
Spray forming, like Powder Metallurgy process, offers unique possibilities. The method leads to rapid solidification, which in turn generates a fine microstructure in the steel. The method allows the manufacture of highly alloyed steels that would be difficult or impossible to produce with conventional methods.
During spray forming, a liquid metal stream is dispersed (atomised) into droplets. These are collected on a rotating disc before full solidification is completed. Unlike the PM process, a finished billet is gradually built up without having to use hot isostatic pressing (HIP). The billet can than be directly forged or rolled into bars or plates.
The resulting material is especially useful for cold work applications where high wear resistance in combination with sufficient cracking resistance is needed.
Spray formed steel offers superior tool life compared to conventional materials thanks to its homogenous structure of a very hard but smaller sized carbides. The smaller size of the carbides leads to a better cracking resistance while the harder carbides provides a better wear resistance compared with conventional steels with simular alloy content.
